Jack & Jill

Jack & Jill

A man and a woman sit on a hill

The grass dips down to lick a lake

The sun warms their skin

He has his head in her lap

His eyes are closed

She is looking at the sky

Do you love me, she says

Yes, he says

He does not open his eyes

She shifts

She looks at the man

His face is smooth

His eyelids twitch

She runs her hand through his hair

He doesn’t open his eyes

I think I love you too much, she says

He doesn’t move

She grabs a handful of his hair

It sprouts in between her fingers like grass

He shifts his head

She releases her grasp

She looks at the sky

A shadow moves over the grass

A crow

The man sighs

The woman looks at him

Crows feet appear near his eyes

She looks at the lake

She cannot tell how deep it is

She bends down

She kisses the man

Twice

One for each eyelid

He doesn’t open his eyes
